Trancending History, and the World. A Tale of Souls and Swords... Eternally Retold. Soul Calibur III...

FAQ

GENERAL INFO

When's it coming out?
October 25th, 2005.

PS2 exclusive? What the hell?
Sorry, that's how things are. In my opinion it's worth getting a PS2 for if you don't already have one. Also, with it being exclusive, Namco gets the chance to make it work really well on one platform instead of semi-well on three of them. It also saves time.

So who are some new characters?

CREATE-A-SOUL

Introduction

Character Creation will allow you to create a very, very customizable character. Everything down to the lip color will be fully customizable. Your character will have a personality, a voice, a fighting style, and it will all be yours to come up with.

Character Occupations

After you choose a gender (male or female, duh), you choose a occupation.

The character you create will have an occupation that you choose, which has a large roll in what the character is like. Each occupation determines quite a bit about your character, such as what moves you character can do. There are also diciplines for each occupation that determine more stuff.

Character Personality

Your character's personality is not chosen from a preset limited number of personalites. Your character's personality is shaped by the way he or she dresses. The more grim or evil looking the clothes are, the more evil-oriented the character will be. The more bright and happy the clothes are, the more good-oriented the character will be. I think this adds a nice finishing touch on character creation. I'm going to be creating characters just to see what kind of people they'll be! =)

Original Character Customization

Yes! Not only can you completely customize your own character, but you can change the colors of the default characters as well.

There will be four customizable parts per character, which parts depending upon who they are. Each part's color can be changed to any of the 192 available colors. Don't like Cassandra with blond hair? Okay, make her a redhead!

Original characters still have more than one costume.

Here are some of the known options you will be able to customize:

# All
# Head
# Hair
# Mask
# Chin
# Lower Torso
# Mid Torso
# Upper Torso
# Arms
# Shoulders
# Neck
# Waist
# Lower Legs
# Upper Legs
# Socks
# Feet
# Face
# Eyebrows
# Lips
# Eyes
# Skin
# Underwear
# Voice

TALES OF SOULS

SC2's one player Arcade mode had almost no story, except for the ending of each character's mode. There was one outcome, and no story while you were playing. All you did was fight people over and over until you beat the last one.

SC3's Tales of Souls mode, however, is nothing like this. It is improvement in every way.

Every character gets a unique storyline, and you get to see where they go and how they get wrapped up into the main plot. Everybody's plot is all going on at once, so what you're doing is seeing the story from a different perspective; you're seeing where the character you chose went and what they did.

The adventure will follow the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, the evil and good swords.

During this adventure, there are many interactive cutscenes. These cutscenes will show your character's personality more. It will show how all the characters interact, meet, become friends, or become enemies.

It will be a very dramatic, fun experience.

Also, this mode is not linear. If you play as the same character twice, different things will occur and the ending may change. For example, you may have to quickly input commands during the cut-scenes, like in Resident Evil 4. These events could alter the storyline.

There will also be a variety of challenges, like minigames and other interesting situations.

What's best about this is that you could play through the same character's game multiple times and see different things. This, combined with how many characters there are, will allow you to have a great experience.

CHRONICLES OF THE SWORD

Chronicles of the Sword mode is a brand new mode for Soul Calibur III. It is a real time strategy mode that also has the classic Soul Calibur fighting added with it. You play as your own CAS character, and use strategy to defeat the opposing armies and to clear your objectives.

As you keep playing your character will gain more experience and will get more powerful. You choose how to direct your men (and women) into combat. You can make units. Not only will you be playing in a brand new story, but the classic characters, such as Mitsurugi, can show up as well, and become friend or foe.

Story

This is yet another tale of souls and swords...

Once, there existed on a great continent three countries--

The Grandall Empire, the Kingdom of Dalkia, and the Halteese Republic.

The Kingdom of Dalkia and the Halteese Republic waged a great war against one another for countless years. The Grandall Empire stayed out of the conflict, amassing their army quietly. Then, the impasse was suddenly broken as the Dalkian Kingdom declared war on Grandall Empire. Amidst the conflict and conspiracy, a new republic, Maletta, emerged...

At the time, the great tactician Chester, who instigated the conflict which later came to be known as the Mantis War, had no yet appeared in the annals of history. And the individual who was to be a key figure in the war was a mere cadet in the Grandall army...

THE GAME'S PROLOGUE

Chosen by history, a man becomes a hero.
Engraved into history, a hero becomes a legend.
--14th century troubadour song

Trancending history and the world, a tale of souls and swords, eternally retold.
--A story from the end of the Middle Ages, author unknown

Some call it the ultimate sword. Some described it as a demon sword in which a powerful spiritual power dwelt. Some said it was the sword of heroes, the savior of kingdoms... Numerous rumors and legends surrounded Soul Edge, but its true nature was that of a cursed sword that devoured human souls.

It was originally a single sword created by the hand of man. It was merely a warrior's tool, possessing no will of its own. But the sword bathed in the blood and hatred of countless battles throughout its dark history, and eventually came to emit an evil aura. It learned to devour souls as it rest the flesh of men, and its power steadily increased.

In one age, a hero acquired Soul Edge. With his iron will, he controlled the sword freely and brought peace to the violent land. He was revered as a king.

In any age, however, there are those who resent great men. The one who took Soul Edge out of envy was none other than the king's own son. Sadly, his soul stolen, he became a puppet to the sword's dark will. The king fought against his son. At the end of their fearsome battle, the king's desperate blow shattered Soul Edge, but also took the life of his son.

When the chaos subsided, the source of the conflict, Soul Edge, had disappeared.

The king was tormented by remorse. Most would have submitted to the overwhelming grief, but the king did no such thing. The abominable Soul Edge would certainly appear again, bringing tragedy with it.

This ill omen steeled the king's resolve. For the sake of the world as well as his own redemption, he vowed to create a holy sword that could fight against the evil blade's powers. With the aid of the greatest sage of the era, the king began work on his grand plan.

Purifying fragments of the cursed sword that he still had, the king finally succeeded in creating the holy sword, Soul Calibur. But it cost him his life.

A sect of guardians was created to carry out the late king's will. These guardians lived in seclusion, passing down the sword secretly from generation to generation in preparation for the day when Soul Edge would unleash its fury. Each time the sword fell back into the hands of powerful warriors and those with evil intentions, Soul Calibur appeared to prevent the cursed weapon from committing unspeakable atrocities.

Stories of the never-ending struggle between the two swords were passed on from one generation to another, giving birth to countless legends and fairly tales.

Time passed, and it was now the end of the sixteenth century.

Over the long years, the two swords had increased their power. Now, they had appeared once again upon the stage of history.

During the course of their conflict, Soul Edge was shattered and Soul Calibur was contaminated with evil energy. The will of the cursed sword appeared to have burned out, but in reality, it had merely been reduced to a smoldering ember. The life of the holy sword, too, was thought to have withered and died, but it was quietly burbling like a spring at the bottom of a deep abyss. Even now, the ancient swords were awaiting the change to regain their true power.

There was a young knight who had been controlled not merely once but several times by the evil sword. When he broke that curse and stabbed through the heart of the cursed weapon with the holy sword, the gears of fate began to creak into motion. A new page would soon be written in the tale of the two swords, opposite in power and bound by destiny...

Hear with your ears the best things; look upon them with clear-seeing thought, for decision between the two Beliefs, each man for himself before the Great sonummation, bethinking you that it be accomplished to our pleasure.

STAGES

Ling-Sheng Su Temple Ruin

The Ling-Sheng Su Temple, famous in the world of matial arts, is located deep within the Chinese mainland.

A few years ago, this historic temple was suddenly destroyed. The influence of the Evil Seed, released by the Soul Edge in a land far to the west, drove the monks of the temple insane, and they tore each other apart with their well-honed combat skills. In this way, the proud Ling-Sheng Su temple vanished.

Water Mill Valley

Giant watermills line the sides of this steep ravine.

These majestic waterwheels catch the flowing torrent of clean water and generate power to aid those who live in this harsh, mountainous terrain. The waterwheels also pump water to irrigate fields. The bountiful water that is drawn up passes through an old aqueduct facility and is carried to the other side of the mountains.

Was it this human ingenuity of borrowing the power of nature to improve life that captured Talim's heart when she visited this place? Or was it perhaps seeing that water--a different type of power from that of the wind she worshipped--also flowed throughout the world?

Valentine Mansion

The mansion of Count Valentine appears to be dark and abandoned, but a light flickers in one corner of the building. Ivy, adopted daughter of the late Count, now uses it as an alchemic workshop and a place for her experiments with magic. The Count had pursued Soul Edge as the key to immortality, but his daughter ascertained that what her father had sought was an evil sword that devoured souls. She swore to destroy it, and in this place the peculier sword dubbed the "Ivy Blade" was born.

And now, having learned of the existance of a sword that opposes Soul Edge, Ivy has holed up in her room. There, she pours over her books, making use of all of her knowledge to research the spirit sword, Soul Calibur. Surely it will not be long before she sets out on a journey in search of further knowledge.

Clock Tower

A stone clock tower that stands at the corner of a quiet temple outside the edge of town. Inside, a complex arrangement of machinery creaks along, ceaselessly counting each passing second. The inside of the rarely-visited tower is dark and gloomy, but light shines in from a window near the top of the clock mechanism brightens up a section of the tower.

After this tower was built, a man began to visit this place. This habit has not changed over the course of his countless lives. He will come here again, to this place where the steady rhythm of machinery counting away the seconds is all that can be heard. For this man who has lost his sense of time over the course of his countless lives, it may be that this is the only place where he can truly feel the passage of time.

Eurydice Temple - Gate of the Gods

The gods of Olympus are long forgotten and no longer worshipped. But a number of phenomena confirm that they once existed. This temple in the clouds is one of them. This circular temple, said to have been constructed by the god of the forge, Hephaestus himself, stands at the peak of a mountain. Around the sides of the mountain spirals a giant stairway.

People constructed a corridor for human use beside the stairway of the gods, for those who came to worship at the mountain peak. In the front of the base of the stairs stands a temple marking the entrance to that corridor. It has been a great long time since this temple was constructed to call the gods to this place, but even those who visit it now will surely be awe-struck by its beauty.

Lost Cathedral

It resembles many others, yet it is like nothing else. A magnificent palace of water that seems to contain every form of architecture known to Europe. No one knows who made it or where it is located. However, it is said that only those with a strong will and a willingness to bet their own lives can reach it.

The great volume of water that flows through it is always circulating and pure, and it is said that it cleanses those who come here to pray. Siegfried seeks a showdown with Soul Edge and atonement for his own sins. Pursuing him, Nightmare, too, reaches this place. Will this holy palace of water be the end of both their journeys?

Battle in the Strait

The Murakami Navy of the inner seas became famous during Japan's warring states period. But when the country was united under Hideyoshi Toyomi and he issued his proclamation against piracy, they were slowly robbed of their power.

The final resistance put forth by the Murakami forces of Noujima was met by the Kuki Navy, who have suffered in the past at the hands of the Murakami. Both sides fought fiercely in a series of sea battles. While originally hold the advantage, the Murakami forces of Noujima eventually began to be pressed back by the Kuki forces. The Kuki forces were backed by Hideyoshi, the effective leader of Japan, and in the end, the Murakami finally yielded.

In the records of this conflict, one can find the name Heishiro Mitsurugi. At the beginning of the conflict, he had supported the Murakami forces.

Information about some of the new characters:

Abyss is the demon version of Zasalamel, and is the “boss” character of the game. He has most of Zasalmel’s moves, plus some extras (kind of like Cervantes and Soul Edge in Soul Edge/Blade). He has a gatling attack that hits multiple times just outside of weapon range. He also has a charge-up that let's him shoot a fireball across the screen; nasty, but you can see it coming from miles away.

Orcadan is the random character (like Charade). He’s a warrior who was cursed and turned into an owl man when fighting the gods. His alternate costume loses doesn’t have the owl head. He only mimics regular characters, not bonus or CAS characters.

Lizardman now has an axe. He seems to play quite different from Cassandra and Sophitia.

Rock now has a mace.

“Bonus” Characters:

There are also bonus characters that can be selected from the character select screen (the box with the exclamation point). These are pre-generated CAS characters. They don’t have their own movesets (they use the CAS movesets), but they do have unique clothing/equipment that other CAS characters can’t use. You can’t edit bonus characters.

Some of the bonus characters include Hwang, Amy, Li Long, Arthur, Revenant, Greed, Miser, Valeria, Hualin, Lynette, Abelia, Luna, Girardot, Chester, Demuth, Aurelia, and Strife.

Information about some of the “bonus” characters:

Hwang was from Soul Edge (a.k.a. Soul Blade) and Soul Calibur. He was, in a sense, replaced by Yun-seong.

Amy is the little girl in Raphael’s story. She also uses rapier like Raphael.

Li Long was in Soul Edge (a.k.a. Soul Blade), and it is very controversial whether he is truly dead or not. In a sense, he was replaced by Maxi. In Soul Calibur III he will be using dual nunchuku and he now has a back-turned stance.

Arthur was a character in some of the versions of Soul Calibur that replaced Mitsurugi. He had the exact same moveset as Mitsurugi. You see, in some countries samurai were banned, so they had to get rid of Mitsurugi and replace him with someone else; these countries had the Arthur version of the game. Arthur seems to use a different sword in Soul Calibur III, however, while he just used a katana in Soul Calibur.

Most of the other bonus characters are from Chronicles of the Sword mode, and also from Tales of Souls mode.

Other Information:

*

All characters have two color pallets that you can edit.
*

Some CAS characters use dual blades and foot blades.
*

There is at least one stage for each of the 25 characters. Cassandra has the burning mansion, Yun-seong has the Egypt stage, Lizardman has the Silk Road ruins, Rock has the coliseum stage, Cervantes has the boat stage, and Sophitia has a shrine.
*

Ivy doesn’t seem to have her long-range stab anymore (6B+K?)
*

Yoshimitsu still has the flag.
*

It seems that Nightmare or Siegfried is the sub-boss.
*

Siegfried plays like Nightmare from Soul Calibur II, while Nightmare gets the change. Seong Mi-na plays like she did in Soul Calibur II, while Kilik is changed.
*

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2355/wsiegfried5ej.png

CONTINUED SPOILERS

There is a random character select box (purple box with the question mark), a randomly generate CAS character box (green box with the question mark), a memory card 1 CAS select (bottom left), and a memory card 2 CAS select (bottom right).
*

The Barbarian class with a great sword has different stances but some Siegfried moves, including Earth Divide. The Thief class has some really cool throws and some moves taken from Talim.
*

You start with six CAS classes (you can unlock four more), each with one weapon style. You can unlock more weapon styles by playing through Chronicles of the Sword mode. You choose your weapon before each battle.
*

There is an option for Japanese voices (with English subtitles) or English voices. Everyone speaks the same language depending on which options (Japanese or English) you have it set to; characters don’t speak their native languages.
*

Cassandra and Sophitia’s moves are much more different now. While they do the same basic thing, they look completely different and probably have different properties.

Regarde Helena dans Dead or Alive...

Nightmare = New.

alors qu'il soit de retour en forme humaine, c'est cool...

Malgré "l'absence" de Siegfried dans SCII, l'apparence humaine était bien là. Prend Nightmare avec son 3ième costume. C'est Siegfried...
